Important.
- We fit every car with chains at our shop to ensure correct fit and instruct on their use. Chain sizes taken off charts are not always correct and we encounter many problems with clients who have hired chains (especially from Sydney) who are given the incorrect size. This causes major problems.
- Some cars will not take chains. Some models of Audi and small Fords are an example. Please refer to your manual to ensure you can fit chains. You can check yourself. Place your hand over top of tyre and if your fingers don't hit any suspension parts your probably OK.
All 2WD vehicles must carry chains within the National Park. It is strongly recommended that AWD's carry chains and 4WD's in severe weather.
Some facts about AWD's and Tyres
In an AWD so long as all four wheels have equal footing, all four tires will turn with an equal amount of power and traction. However, just as two wheels on an axle are connected by a differential, the front and rear drive shafts are connected by a differential as well. This means, if one wheel of an AWD vehicle loses traction, the problem is amplified because ALL of the power goes to that one wheel while the other three sit stationary. This is why, without a form of traction control, an AWD vehicle is more or less useless. A 4WD will apply traction to at least one front and one rear tyre and a "diff lock" will supply even greater traction.
Tyres
Snow chains are vital for most Australian vehicles (2WD's,SUV's and 4WD's) because they are mostly fitted with performance road tyres. These are ineffective and provide little grip in the snow and the best option for regular snow travellers is to fit a set of winter tyres.
We will consider renting sets of rims and winter tyres for problem vehicles, particularly those that can't be fitted with chains at all.
